Webinar of May Branch Meeting: Dr Steve Casci: Vertically Challenged - why the up and down decides your aligner outcomes.
Clear aligners have transformed how we approach orthodontics in general practice - but not all tooth movements are created equal. In this presentation, Dr Steven Casci draws on nearly 20 years of aligner-exclusive practice and over 2,000 cases to explore the vertical dimension: the axis where aligners both shine and stumble. From deep bites that look perfect on the ClinCheck but fail to translate to clinical reality, to open bite corrections that aligners handle better than any other appliance, Steven unpacks the biomechanics, the evidence, and the clinical decision-making that separates predictable outcomes from frustrating surprises. Whether you're considering offering aligners for the first time or you've been using them for years, you'll leave with a practical framework for knowing which vertical cases to take on - and which to think twice about.
Learning Outcomes.
- Recognise how facial type influences vertical treatment planning and appliance selection.
- Understand why clear aligner deep bite correction underperforms relative to digital predictions, and what the current evidence shows.
- Identify the clinical scenarios where aligners offer a genuine mechanical advantage over fixed appliances for vertical control.
- Diagnose and manage iatrogenic posterior open bites - the most common vertical complication in aligner therapy.
